Thruxton Circuit: A High-Speed Legacy and a Thrill for Truck Racing
Thruxton, famed as Britain’s fastest racing circuit, combines thrilling high-speed straights and sweeping curves that challenge even the most skilled drivers and riders. Nestled in Hampshire, this historic venue owes its origins to the surplus of RAF airbases following World War II.
Thruxton is now a pivotal stop for the British Truck Racing Championships (BTRC), with 2024 marking a standout year. Spectators were treated to a spectacular display of raw power and precision, culminating in a thrilling visit to the podium for MV Truck Racing—a moment that left fans buzzing and eager for more.
The story of Thruxton begins in 1940, during World War II, when RAF Thruxton was built as a satellite airbase to support nearby RAF Andover. The base played a critical role in the war, housing Bristol Blenheims, Airspeed Oxfords, and American Lockheed Lightnings. It was even part of D-Day operations, with Whitley bombers towing gliders for the historic invasion.
After the war, the airbase was decommissioned in 1946 and sold into private hands. By 1950, the site had drawn the attention of motorcycle racers, and Thruxton’s first official race, organized by the Southampton and District Motorcycle Club, took place that April.
The flowing perimeter road sections of the track, while rough, quickly gained a reputation as a favourite among riders. Car racing joined the scene in 1952, but deteriorating runways saw four-wheeled racing temporarily halt in 1954. Motorcycle racing persisted until 1964, after which the track underwent significant improvements to accommodate modern motorsport.
In recent decades, truck racing has added a new dimension to Thruxton’s appeal. This unique motorsport, featuring 5-ton machines with over 1,300 horsepower, showcases raw power, technical skill, and breathtaking speed.
The British Truck Racing Championships have become a highlight of Thruxton’s calendar, delivering high-octane action that’s as thrilling for fans as it is demanding for drivers. The circuit’s fast straights and challenging corners push these mechanical beasts—and their pilots—to their limits, something that Tom obviously enjoyed as he climbed the podium!
